True Vintage-70's Knits and Suede

Image
Whoa, it got cold!  I've already needed my coat in the early mornings and evenings, but I'm still making due with cardigans in the daytime. This one is a heavy, acrylic beast. A cardigan with pockets? Be still my heart. I'm always tempted to belt this one, but in the end I never do. I had to be outdoors quite a bit today, but I kept nice and warm and had a place to shove my hands when they started turning blue. The skirt has pockets as well, but they're not deep. I found the vintage space-dyed cowl-neck at Goodwill on a rack of similar, modern tops. I suppose the neck caught my eye as vintage being thicker than what you'd see made today, but there was also something about the quality of the yarn. Today's knits look fuzzy after a few washes, where the lines on this were still sharp. The top hadn't been stretched out of shape either-a dead giveaway it was vintage. A quick look inside at the woven label confirmed it. I had several tops like this when they were ...

If You Really Like Something...

...buy it in every possible colour. Yes, the faux-Mexican tourist skirt appears in yet another colourway.  Someone removed most of the sequins from this one. That's actually okay with me-I might go wild and decorate it with rhinestone studs instead. I can't wear them day after day, or it would start to look like a uniform, though as uniforms go, it wouldn't be a half bad one. I spent enough years in jobs where I had to wear "respectable" (read, "dour") looking clothes that I'm having the time of my life these days getting dressed. Nothing makes you appreciate a fun skirt like five days a week in a navy Brooks Brothers suit. God, I'm glad those days are over-not just for myself, but for the office workers of today.  I remember a rather unpleasant coworker complaining to my boss that I was wearing an animal print scarf with my suit and that it didn't project the proper, "Decorum." That was 1986. I kept wearing it and no one else said ...

Mexican Flowers

My Mexican shell flowers are blooming! I'm so excited, as this is the first year I've grown them, and didn't know what to expect. I've tried to stagger the blooms in my garden planting things that flower throughout the season-but that doesn't always go to plan with our unpredictable weather. These will be a welcome burst of colour as we wait for the gladiolas to bloom. The wasps and bees are enjoying the garden as well. Danny tells me this is in fact not a wasp, but a robber fly. I learn all sorts of interesting things from that kid. Speaking of beautiful florals from Mexico...here's the vintage hand-tooled leather bag I bought last week. The inside is lovely too... In person it looks like pale, watercolour flowers. My camera isn't doing it justice. Sadly, the Armadillo bag arrived broken in pieces from poor packaging, but the seller issued a full refund so at least I wasn't stuck with a, "Busted Armadilla". On the positive side, I get to shout...
