Happy Hallowe'en

Image
Thanksgiving dinner for Halloween? Why not?! Danny wore the costume to go grocery shopping with me. Most people laughed. The employees were really entertained. Danny dressed up our Christmas penguin so he could enjoy the holiday as well. It began snowing as we snapped these photos. Ah well, it had to happen eventually. So far, it isn't sticking to the ground. Hope you've had fun (or quiet if you don't dig Halloween).

Best Of-Halloween Costumes Edition

Image
As Halloween approaches I thought it might be fun to take a trip down memory lane. The beatnik costume was the result of us being broke, and Danny being too young to care about a costume. The bongo drums are made from empty Neocate containers. Since the stuff was costing us more than caviar (and although medically needed, wasn't covered by insurance) I wanted to get my money out of it by re-using the canisters. Hey kid, quit teething on my City Lights editions. Why don't you ask my log? When I needed them to custom cut the log for me at the garden centre I had to explain the Log Lady to a kid that never saw Twin Peaks. Mostly, he just looked at me like I was mad. The waiter from The Meaning of Life. That's some very expensive fake vomit in the bucket. Still haven't thought of anything else to do with it. I'm sure even Mother Goose wanted to throttle that bloody fowl once in a while. The Penguin and Lola Lasagne Frank the Combine from Cars. Gorgon Slayer! I had so mu...

Autumn Walks and a Barmbrack Recipe

Image
Is there anything better than walking a trail on an Autumn morning?  We've been hitting the trails early in search of birds. Most mornings, the grass is still wet with dew, so I've been wearing these very old leather boots. They're tall enough to protect my legs, waterproof, and so old and beat-up I don't care what happens to them. My skirt is made of loden, which is largely water resistant, and dries quickly when it does manage to get wet. I find that useful when moving through brush. I also own a pair of loden trousers. I've had both pieces going on 30+ years and they're still holding up well. It was quite a splash out at the time, but I've more than got what I paid for. The wool cardigan was something I purchased in London on a whim because it  was unexpectedly freezing. It has a few moth nibbles (it is a good 25 years old now) but I wear it for outdoor activities and chores at home. This cardigan was my go-to piece when we lived on the farm as it was war...

You Don't Need a Seance to Talk With Ghosts

Image
"Hey, Goody? Can I come in the house?" "No." "Here, I have some broccoli for you." "That's MY broccoli." "Can I come in the house?" "No." "Why not?" "The house is already haunted." "Aw, that's no ghost, that's just bats in the ductwork." "No." "Why does the cat get to stay inside?" "Look, I have to go bleed the radiators..." "You don't *have* radiators, you have forced hot air with a bat in the ducts." "You can't come in." "Rolland the snowman gets to live inside" "In the freezer ." "Can I..." "No." "Rats."  There was something so adorably goofy about the ghost, I had to buy him last weekend. I'm sure he gives passersby a good laugh. The cat had to go in the window as we have several neighbours with cats that do just that. I'm sure they're looking at it thinking, ...

The Best Sale of the Year

Image
I've been having a ruthless clear out (must be done from time to time) and in the process have come across some items I'd forgotten about. Both this top and skirt are slated for moving along to new homes, but I might think twice about the top. I like Liberty (who doesn't?) but the Liberty for Target range was kinda meh. I like the print fine, but the fabric is synthetic and the ruffle at the bottom, annoying. It is too long for the 3/4 sleeves. I'm sure it would look great with a pair of skinny jeans, but that's not my look. I'd forgotten about this pleated silk skirt. It has a Neiman Marcus label ("Needless Markup" as my husband calls it) and a Made in Korea tag. I'd call it 80's based on the length. I wore my share of long skirts in the 80's, with long blazers and massive shoulder pads. A long, white double breasted blazer would be lovely with this skirt-but I don't own one and don't plan to seek one out. I had one...in the 80...
