If You Really Like Something...

...buy it in every possible colour. Yes, the faux-Mexican tourist skirt appears in yet another colourway.  Someone removed most of the sequins from this one. That's actually okay with me-I might go wild and decorate it with rhinestone studs instead. I can't wear them day after day, or it would start to look like a uniform, though as uniforms go, it wouldn't be a half bad one. I spent enough years in jobs where I had to wear "respectable" (read, "dour") looking clothes that I'm having the time of my life these days getting dressed. Nothing makes you appreciate a fun skirt like five days a week in a navy Brooks Brothers suit. God, I'm glad those days are over-not just for myself, but for the office workers of today.  I remember a rather unpleasant coworker complaining to my boss that I was wearing an animal print scarf with my suit and that it didn't project the proper, "Decorum." That was 1986. I kept wearing it and no one else said ...

The Watercolour Dress

Image
This dress has been in my life so long I no longer remember which relative handed it down to me. It seems as though it has always been there, at the back of the cupboard waiting to be worn on the most unpleasantly warm days. The bodice is lined with a second layer of the same tissue-thin, gauze-like cotton that the skirt is, but a half slip is absolutely necessary on the bottom. I have a very lightweight, pale pink slip purchased just for this dress back in the 80's. When it finally succumbs to age, I don't know what I shall do. A practical person would begin seeking out a replacement now, but well, you know. A worrying sign is the side-close metal zipper is starting to catch. The only thing worse than replacing zippers is finding a short, metal side zipper that won't chew-up the lightweight fabric when it invariably does  catch. My pessimism on the subject is rooted in experience. For the moment, I'm keeping my fingers crossed and as the dress is large enough, just pu...

I'll Have a Blue Hawaiian Without You

Image
A Blue Hawaiian cocktail sounds pretty good right now, but I'd need to go out and buy Curacao. Better stick to Pimms and lemonade instead.  I found this dress in a box I'd forgotten about, and have no memory of having purchased it. It isn't vintage, but it easily passes. I was in the mood to wear something cheerful. How'd I do? I waited in the car while Mr. ETB popped into the Indian market for curry leaves (and a deep-fried snack he ate before returning to the car). Bored, I photographed my new (to me) vintage shoes, but the real star of this photo is that blue sky out the window.  Car-selfie using the mirror on the sun-visor. I was really  bored. I think the "fried snack" was probably plural, as he was in there quite some time.  Outfit Particulars: Jones New York dress-can't remember Blue vintage beads-Goodwill Flower pin-Tiff and Tam Earrings-Hand-Me-Ups Vintage sandals-Hand-Me-Ups Vintage handbag-Goodwill Hair Flowers-Tiff and Tam Fragrance-Guerlain Gu...
