Autumn Walks and a Barmbrack Recipe

Image
Is there anything better than walking a trail on an Autumn morning?  We've been hitting the trails early in search of birds. Most mornings, the grass is still wet with dew, so I've been wearing these very old leather boots. They're tall enough to protect my legs, waterproof, and so old and beat-up I don't care what happens to them. My skirt is made of loden, which is largely water resistant, and dries quickly when it does manage to get wet. I find that useful when moving through brush. I also own a pair of loden trousers. I've had both pieces going on 30+ years and they're still holding up well. It was quite a splash out at the time, but I've more than got what I paid for. The wool cardigan was something I purchased in London on a whim because it  was unexpectedly freezing. It has a few moth nibbles (it is a good 25 years old now) but I wear it for outdoor activities and chores at home. This cardigan was my go-to piece when we lived on the farm as it was war...

All the 80's Looks in One Hideous Jacket

Image
The Jaeger jacket gets the yearly wear. I own three, but this one is by far the strangest. The crazy, long lapels, the goofy shoulder pads, the pockets so low you'd need absurdly long arms to reach them. This jacket is every bad idea from the 80's rolled into one. I'd never part with it! The skirt is equally bonkers. Prince of Wales check and gingham in alternating panels. The fabric is a very stiff cotton that would be best used for upholstering outdoor furniture, and the heavy, industrial zipper better suited to a duffel bag. The length is quirky too. There's a very old label in it, in Hebrew. It looks like something put together in a home ec class on a kibbutz. Needless to say, I've been wearing it because I like oddly constructed clothing. I just wish I knew the story behind it.  The socks are of course the Ouija patterned ones I bought at the Halloween shop. They're quite tight on me. I have, thanks to all the running larger-than-typical calves. Most days I...

Vogelfanger bin ich ja

Back to the park looking for the Pink-Sided Junco, without any success, but we did spot a number of other birds, so the trip wasn't a loss. The weather has been sunny and beautiful, but at this point we could get snow-so we're determined to get outdoors while it lasts. I'm wearing my old-lady over-glasses because my eyes are so sensitive to sunlight it isn't worth risking a pair of regular sunnies. These block sunlight from the sides as well-and they're polarised. That's helpful when you're looking up into the sky for a tiny bird. My pumpkin earrings have a light inside that flashes with the press of a button, but the sun had them glowing naturally today.  I found a nest blown down in the grass today. Whatever bird was using it has long-since fledged, and it was surprisingly clean. No, I'm not going to make soup from it.  I gave this tiered wrap skirt a first wear. Yes, I have trainers on my feet-you didn't think I'd take good shoes through a mud...

Rocktober Rose

Image
Yeah, yeah, I'm wearing brown again...but this time I've accented with rose. That's radical for me, so take a good look as it isn't likely to happen again. I don't know why I don't wear this combination more often, as it seems to work okay.  I ran across my shadow at the park. Hi shadow!  Oh shadow, that really isn't very polite!  Well, never mind her, she's obviously having a bad day. I like this park, there's so mushroom to play. You can groan at that one if you like. You're not actually groaning, are you?! I had lost my bracelet in the park, but returning the following day, I found it! Then, I promptly lost a brooch. I haven't found that unfortunately. The Fuzzy-Headed Twitcher found a rare bird (for our area) earlier this week. He's seen it twice since, but was only able to get one not-great photo. We're still waiting to see what the e-Bird people have to say. He's excited anyway, but we've been spending an awful lot of t...

Rocktoberfest-Autumn Neutrals Edition

Whew, what a nice but busy weekend I had! There was opera, baseball, baking, running and even time for a spot of thrifting. Can't find fault with any of it...well, it would have been nice if our team won, but you can't have everything. I did well in the thrifts and I will have some interesting pieces to show you in coming posts. I've been trying to avoid buying all but the very best pieces as I absolutely need nothing.  Good thing the shops have been generously offering up the very best stuff! I did resist buying more pottery... not easily done . I could buy a complete China service for what I spent on four pair of tights at Target today. Yeah, but I can't wear a salad plate under a skirt, 'ya know? I wasn't sure if I'd ever shown this Mexican tourist jacket on the blog, so I wanted to make certain the back was photographed as well. The sun thwarted our attempts at a detailed photo, but I think you can get the idea. The jacket is made of felt anf the flowers...

Skirts and Sweaters-Wardrobe Staples

Image
Ow! I have to stop wearing staples! Before I get my hat and leave...  I realised as I dressed this morning that I've been more or less a sweater and skirt sort of person my entire life. What could be easier? Dress it up or down with scarves, necklaces, brooches-you have an outfit. I struggle with summer as a blouse doesn't quite work the same (it should, but...). Once things cool off, I'm back in my comfort zone wearing the clothes that make me happy. Of course there's room for dresses, suits and even trousers, but when I bolt out of bed late for wherever it is I need to be that morning, I like having a "go-to" look. This is that look. I added the vintage Pendleton '49er jacket because it was so damn cold  in the morning. By afternoon it was no longer required. The 80's does 40's look of the sweater and skirt works well with the true vintage jacket, purse, and brooches. I have no problem mixing eras, and even the 80's Naturalizer shoes have a g...
