Christmas Brooch of the Day-Day Fourteen-and a Chanukah Bonus

 A pair of Christmas trees. Unsigned, no idea when they are from though they scream late 80's/early 90's to me-but that's just a guess.
I was complaining on Instagram that I don't have a Chanukah sweater or any brooches. Radostin came up with an idea, and inspired,  I grabbed one of Danny's dreidels and made my own brooch. Thanks, Radostin!

Tonight is the first night of Chanukah. I baked some kichels (puffy egg biscuits/cookies) and I'll fry potato pancakes because if I didn't, there would be two very disappointed fellas. I can't stand them (the potatoes. The fellas are still more or less tolerable??), or the smell of frying fat, but once a year I'll get out the heavy cast iron pan and fry a batch. I have a not-so-secret ingredient in mine-a grated carrot. Sometimes I use half an apple as well. Anyway, a happy Chanukah to those that celebrate.

As Halloween approaches I thought it might be fun to take a trip down memory lane. The beatnik costume was the result of us being broke, and Danny being too young to care about a costume. The bongo drums are made from empty Neocate containers. Since the stuff was costing us more than caviar (and although medically needed, wasn't covered by insurance) I wanted to get my money out of it by re-using the canisters. Sunshine on My Shoulders

There's off-the-shoulder, and then there's this.  I guess I can rule this out as a potential State Fair dress-I can't lean forward in it. Don't want people whispering about, "The pie slut from Omaha," Sigh. I bought this dress in the sale at Lady Vintage, but I bought it too big. I'm so accustomed to clothes being small on top that I err on the large side of measurements. The dress is cut very generously up top for a US size 14. The sleeves are meant to fit tight on the arms as well. That's okay, I'll make a few adjustments and it will be perfectly wearable-so long as I don't bend over! "Hey Pie Slut , didja drop something over here? Heh, heh." Not falling for that  one.  I should mention that the dress is beautifully made from a heavy sateen cotton. If You Really Like Something...

...buy it in every possible colour. Yes, the faux-Mexican tourist skirt appears in yet another colourway.  Someone removed most of the sequins from this one. That's actually okay with me-I might go wild and decorate it with rhinestone studs instead. I can't wear them day after day, or it would start to look like a uniform, though as uniforms go, it wouldn't be a half bad one. I spent enough years in jobs where I had to wear "respectable" (read, "dour") looking clothes that I'm having the time of my life these days getting dressed. Nothing makes you appreciate a fun skirt like five days a week in a navy Brooks Brothers suit. God, I'm glad those days are over-not just for myself, but for the office workers of today.  I remember a rather unpleasant coworker complaining to my boss that I was wearing an animal print scarf with my suit and that it didn't project the proper, "Decorum."
